Taj Mahal
Agra, India
Photographed in the middle of the day, when the sun sits directly overhead and the marble turns almost white against a hard blue sky.
Midday at Agra, in the light most photographers avoid. High, hard, unforgiving — and the only light that shows what the marble actually does, which is go luminous rather than grey. The inlay work reads at full contrast and the gardens hold their colour. The most technically demanding frame in the collection and the one that holds up largest.
Where it hangs well: formal rooms, entries, and interiors with a blue or cool palette.
